Making fun of new-agey people by making fun of spirit animals is something I really enjoy, so when I saw the words spirit bear on the cover of this month’s National Geographic I was deeply amused.

But if anyone should be made fun of it’s me. I didn’t know that there was a bear (Kemode) that’s officially a spirit bear, and I certainly didn’t know that the place where these actual real bears live, The Great Bear Rainforest on the coast of British Columbia, was so…magical. Now I have go see them (of course).  And, though I can barely feed myself and traveling there is prohibitively expensive, I’ve already started saving up to go.

Spirit bears! I will never mock you again, so please don’t maul me when I visit your home.
