bonnet

Have you sunk your teeth into a “bonnet book,” one of the hottest literary crazes sweeping the plains? “Bonnet book” is the nickname given to the chaste and demure (yet bewitching!) Amish romance novels written by non-Amish writers that are currently selling millions of copies.   The books often involve “an Amish character who falls for an outsider…à la Romeo and Juliet.”  While some Amish feel these books “present a distorted, soap-opera version of Amish life,” lots of Amish women love them, though they were originally targeted to non-Amish women, who can’t get enough of this exotic culture and the kindergarten love games it engenders. As book buyer for Barnes and Noble says, “It’s almost like you put a person with a bonnet or an Amish field in the background and it automatically starts to sell well.”  I see some Amished-up rereleases in the future! Frodo Baggins would sure look swell in a bonnet (or does he already wear one?).
