Jason Boog from GalleyCat went to Puetro Rico and made a video essay that “retraces Thompson’s footsteps around 1959, when he struggled as a reporter at a Puerto Rican newspaper.” This experiences served as inspiration for Thompson’s novel The Rum Diary, though the book wasn’t published for another 30 years.
The adaptation of the novel is currently being shot in Puerto Rico, and Johnny Depp and his family are hanging out on a yacht.
In his video essay, Jason used information from this article on Hunter Thompson’s Puerto Rican experience from Literary Traveler. (Has anyone made a cheap-gonzo, even-porn called Hunter Thompson’s Puerto Rican Experience? They should.)
