This November, Penguin will publish The Original of Laura, Nabokov’s final, unfinished novel. Nabokov requested that the book – written on 138 index cards – be destroyed after his death, but his son didn’t listen to him. Nice work, Dimitri.
The book is “narrated by a man infatuated with his promiscuous wife, thinking back to the start of his obsession when they were youths.” Instead of piecing the work together from the cards, each one will be “reproduced with a transcript of their text on the facing page.”
And there is more Nabokov to come. Penguin is releasing a book of his poems in 2010 and a collection of letters between him and his wife that have never been seen by the public.
