Margaret Atwood has decided not to attend the inaugural Emirates Airline International Festival of Literature in Dubai after the launch of  Geraldine Bedell’s The Gulf Between Us was removed from the program because the book contains potentially offensive (GAY GAY GAY) material. It has been banned in the UAE.

Atwood said this about her decision:

“I was greatly looking forward to the festival, and to the chance to meet readers there; but, as an international vice president of Pen – an organization concerned with the censorship of writers–I cannot be part of the festival this year.”
